Elmo’s Blues

The golden crown, the boyish charm
An innocence of youth shattered the calm
Your vision of sound was the driving force
A passion, a journey, you plotted the course

Master of string, of wind and key
There was no limit to who you could be
But gone is the sound that graced the age
That started a chapter on a new page

Behind the pomp, the dandy, the cad
Was but a simple country lad
The lure of money, of fame and splendour
Success and riches fuelled the bender

The cracks appeared, widened by fear
The sounds of doom you could not hear
Pushed out by those whose respect you craved
On your bed of stone their path was paved

Scores of women and kids left behind
Cocktails of drugs that affected your mind
A broken will, an acceptance of fate
Nothing but loneliness when you needed a mate

A legacy of vices taken all too often
For the hazy relief of a situation forgotten
The effects were there for all to see
When all you desired was to be free

The music betrayed, ‘friends’ turned cold
Too tired to fight, a spiral out of control
No single hand that did the deed
You slipped away, finally freed

Those who remain still take to the stage
With a God like status but no dues paid
Loved and revered in equal measure
By leagues of fans overcome with pleasure

They hush the truth and push their lies
Blocking the source from our blue skies
Assuming your mantra, your very being
The Judas Twins history unseeing

Well fly young Elmo, unhindered, unbound
Fly to the beat of your own mystical sound
We who remain will beat your drum
And secure forever your bright burning sun
